Rapidshare ordered to pay $ 34 million

The system of P2P file sharing has just suffered a blow after a court in Germany sentenced popular file hosting site Rapidshare to pay $ 34 million. Reason: copyright violation.

This company was denounced by GEMA, a body representing composers, authors and music publishers from around the world. By not having checked this, Rapidshare will have to pay these 34 million euros and also withdraw the listing of topics covered and, secondly, to take appropriate measures to ensure that never again it will be available anymore.

It is not the first time, a while ago a same kind of issue happened. On that occasion, the judge simply forced them to withdraw any type of musical content that is copyrighted. RapidShare provides a system for storing and sharing files over the Internet. The problem is that the files are uploaded by users and it is difficult to control if they are infringing copyright.
